About
Harmeet Rehal (they/them) is a trans, disabled, Sikh-Panjabi, multi-disciplinary artist, community organizer, arts educator, access doula and researcher based in Tkaronto/Toronto, with roots in working class suburbs in so-called Brampton and Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. Across Harmeet’s decade long experience, a Disability Justice and an abolitionist approach remains central, and they are interested in creating portals where folks can show up in their wholeness. While Harmeet works across several mediums, the majority of their portfolio is attributed to designs and illustrations created for brands and organizations engaged in equity related work.
Through contemporary approaches to Panjabi textiles and furniture design, the rest of their practice plays with memory and ritual specific to their familial lineage, full of intergenerationally disabled artists and working class resistence. Harmeet is further exploring these themes through archival methodologies at York University in the Critical Disability Studies Masters’ program.
They have presented work at the Art Gallery of Mississauga, Spadina Museum, Tangled Art + Disability, Gallery 1313, and Whippersnapper Gallery. They have also completed artist residencies at ArtworksTO, YTB Gallery, Creative Users Project, and The NationalAccess Centre x Won Lee studio. Harmeet is currently the Project Manager for Towards Just Care and a program coordinator at Story Planet.
